Beer
In Sweden, I enjoyed drinking non-alcoholic beer. I thought it went well with food. Milk is too heavy, water too ordinary, and juice and soft drinks too sweet.
I’ve seen some shops in The Rif that sell non-alcoholic beer. The same price or slightly more expensive than in Sweden. Many Moroccans get upset just when I mention non-alcoholic beer.
Of course, there are people who drink beer and wine in Morocco. You can get hold of both legally and illegally. I’ve only ever seen people drinking to get drunk or tipsy. Not to have a glass with their meal.
Better than beer
I used to miss drinking non-alcoholic beer with my meals. But now I’ve found an alternative to beer, which is actually even better: juice made from milk and avocado.
Avocado juice is quite filling, just like beer. Just like beer, it tastes less sweet than soft drinks and juice. Provided no suger has been added, of course.
Avocado juice is easy to find. Many places in The Rif offer freshly squeezed juice and they always have avocado on the menu.
If you have access to a juicer, you can easily blend avocado and milk yourself. Avocados in The Rif are tasty and cheap, and most greengrocers sells them.
Buttermilk
Another drink that is somewhat reminiscent of beer is buttermilk, as it is tangy and slightly filling but less heavy than milk. Buttermilk is used in seykouk and is also served with couscous on Fridays.
